Where Design Tells a Story
When Alliance Residential Company set out to reimagine multifamily living in San Diego’s Mission Valley, they didn’t just want an apartment complex. They wanted a community with a soul. Hendy was engaged to bring that vision to life, providing full interior design services across all amenity spaces, common areas, unit interiors, and outdoor furnishings for this 497-unit, eight-story community.
A Design Rooted in Place
From the first design conversation, it was clear that this project would be something different. Located at the intersection of diverse neighborhoods, the space needed to pay homage to its surroundings while also carving out its own identity. The cultural depth of Mission Valley, its Spanish colonial history, its proximity to Mexico, and its layered identity became the foundation for every design decision. Folkloric Mexican and Spanish colonial influences were woven deliberately throughout the community’s narrative, not as decoration, but as an authentic expression of where this building lives.
Arrival as Experience
At Broadstone Mission Valley, the arrival sequence was designed to signal immediately that this is not an ordinary place. A hand-painted archway featuring intricate folk art patterns and a Frida Kahlo poem sets the tone, drawing residents and guests into a story that unfolds with every step. Beyond the archway, a grand two-story lobby, anchored by reclaimed wood beams, custom plasterwork, and carefully curated light fixtures, delivers a sense of arrival that feels both monumental and warm.
Spaces That Invite and Inspire
The leasing office was conceived as a house within a house, a layered and intimate environment separated by drapery. This flows seamlessly into a co-working space filled with live-edge tables, a multitude of seating configurations, natural materials, and conference rooms designed for focus and collaboration.
Throughout every space, the material palette tells its own story. Venetian plaster, warm terracotta, reclaimed wood, and latillas, traditional wooden poles used in both the lobby and upper structure, reinforce an authentically textural, old-world atmosphere that feels collected over time rather than designed all at once.
Amenities as Destinations
Hendy’s scope extended across an impressive range of amenity spaces, each designed as a distinct destination. The eighth-floor open-air clubroom, rooftop fitness area and deck, and golf simulator offer residents elevated everyday experiences. The speakeasy-inspired cantina, complete with a secret door, concrete floors, brick veneer, terracotta, and vintage Mexican leather chairs, is perhaps the most theatrical space in the building, designed to feel as though it was plucked straight from another time and place. No detail was too small: the dog spa was given the full Hendy treatment, with warm finishes and custom artwork that bring personality and delight to even the most unexpected corner of the building.
The Result
San Diego’s multifamily market remains one of the most competitive in Southern California, with overall vacancy holding tight at 4.9%. Broadstone Mission Valley was designed with that reality in mind. When every detail serves a story and every space earns its place, the architecture becomes the amenity.
